I’m Sticking With Kiefer is written in the great tradition of the buddy story. Switching between present day and that turbulent decade known as the eighties, the audience follows the fictionalized life of Lou Diamond Phillips. Currently, Lou’s not doing so well. His marriage is in trouble, and he’s grappling with career decisions. If only life were easy like when he starred in the Young Guns series. One day one of his friends from the Regulators, Emilio Estevez, comes back into his life with a proposition, one that might help Lou forget his personal problems, at least for a little while. But is it the right choice? “I’ve always been a fan of 80s movies, having grown up in that era,” explained director/writer Sam Varteniuk. “I began to notice how many times certain actors from that generation worked together on multiple projects, right up to the present. It started me thinking about the strong connections that might have been formed, as well as some of the conflicts and betrayals. I realized how much fun it would be to take these actors and treat them like archetypes, essentially play with history and character to create a fictional situation. It seemed like a perfect setting to have some fun with these characters that are recognizable to audiences today, and explore friendship and loyalty in a crazy business like Hollywood.” I’m Sticking With Kiefer is performed by Mostly Water Theatre; Craig Buchert, Matt Stanton and Trent Wilkie, and joined by friends Dave DeGagné, Ellen Chorley, Elizabeth Ludwig, and Amy Neufeld. This presentation is produced with generous support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. I’m Sticking With Kiefer is a story of friendship with a universal appeal, especially for those of us who remember the eighties. Whatever happens, it’s sure to go down as a blaze of glory.
